Why a "Green" Update?

Two weeks ago, our Program Manager Emily Doerr attended the NeighborWorks Training Institute's "Residential Green Building" class in Washington, DC. During this intensive 2-day training, Emily was presented with both useful resources and lots of inspiration for the trend of making our buildings and communities healthier, more livable and energy efficient - in a word, more GREEN.

Also, in the Summer 2007 edition of Developer magazine, Michigan is noted as being in the top 10 states of number of LEED-certified projects - let's keep it up!

United States Green Building Council

LEED Certified sealThe U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) is a non-profit composed of leaders from every sector of the building industry working to promote buildings that are environmentally responsible, profitable and healthy places to live and work. There are more than 10,500 member organizations who are united to advance the council's mission of transforming the building industry to sustainability. HUD Launches Nationwide Green Building Initiative

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has launched a nationwide pilot program to use "green building" principles to rehabilitate properties within HUD s Section 8 portfolio. Specifically, the program will offer modest green building incentives to owners and purchasers of properties in the Mark-to-Market Program. Since 1997, HUD's Office of Affordable Housing Preservation has restructured over 1,600 privately-owned, Section 8-subsidized multifamily properties. Under M2M, properties are rehabilitated and debt resized to account for market rent levels. Eligible property owners can apply for incentives to perform rehabilitation and maintenance using green building principles and to collect ongoing data on how green retrofits impact utility consumption and indoor air quality.
